Rivian’s 2027 R1S Finally Gets Second-Row Captain’s Chairs
The 2027 R1S adds optional second-row captain’s chairs with a center pass-through, Rivian’s most-requested interior feature since launch. The R1 lineup also moves to Premium, Performance, and Quad trims, with starting prices of $83,990 for the R1S and $79,990 for the R1T.
IRVINE — Rivian’s 2027 R1S is now available with optional second-row captain’s chairs, a six-seat layout the company calls its most-requested interior feature since the SUV launched.
The new middle-row seats leave a center pass-through to the third row, so a passenger can walk back without folding a seat forward. Each chair is heated, folds flat, and keeps full car-seat tie-downs. Armrests stow flush into the seats, and a cup holder folds down from the inside edge of each chair.
Long gear can slide down the middle of the cabin with all six seats occupied. Rivian says the open layout does not cut into the R1S’s cargo capacity.
Buyers who want seven seats can still order a second-row bench. Rivian lists the bench on both interiors for R1S Premium, and on Black Mountain Signature for Performance and Quad.
The seating change arrives with a broader 2027 R1 refresh for the R1S and R1T. Rivian is dropping Dual and Tri as motor-count labels and reorganizing the lineup into three trim tiers: Premium, Performance, and Quad. The structure matches how Rivian already sells the R2.
Premium is the dual-motor trim, rated at 533 horsepower and 610 lb-ft of torque, with a claimed 0-60 mph time as quick as 4.5 seconds. An optional power upgrade raises that to 665 horsepower and a 3.4-second sprint. A Long Range pack is rated at up to 410 miles on the R1S and 420 miles on the R1T, using Rivian’s EPA estimates with 22-inch road wheels.
Performance is the three-motor trim at 850 horsepower and 1,103 lb-ft, with a claimed 0-60 as quick as 2.9 seconds and up to 371 miles of range. Quad remains the halo, at 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 lb-ft, with a claimed 2.5-second 0-60 on the R1T in Launch Mode and up to 374 miles of range.
Esker Silver, the liquid-metal finish Rivian introduced on the R2, becomes the included paint on both R1S and R1T and replaces LA Silver. Interior names also shift toward the R2 pattern, with Signature packages on Performance and Quad.
The R1T picks up a new 20-inch Adventure All-Season wheel and Goodyear tire as standard on Premium and as a no-cost option on Performance. Rivian rates that setup at 300 miles on Premium, 380 miles on Premium Long Range, and 348 miles on Performance.
2027 R1S pricing starts at $83,990. The R1T starts at $79,990. Both figures are before taxes and fees. Rivian already moved to those entry points earlier in 2026 after it discontinued Dual Standard pack models.
On Premium, Rivian’s configurator ties the captain’s chairs to the Sound + Vision package, so the chairs land as a $4,000 to $6,000 add-on depending on interior. On Performance and Quad, the chairs start at $1,500 with Black Mountain Signature and rise to $4,000 or $4,500 with the captain’s-chairs-only Signature interiors.
