Rivian’s Second Half Is a Near-Double Delivery Test Built Around R2

After raising full-year deliveries to 65,000–70,000, Rivian needs roughly 42,400–47,400 handovers in the second half. R2 is the volume bet; Q4 is where the ramp has to show up.

IRVINERivian’s second-half story is not a vibe. It is a delivery spreadsheet that almost doubles the first half.

The company has raised full-year 2026 delivery guidance to 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles, up from 62,000 to 67,000. First-half deliveries totaled 22,559 after 10,365 in the first quarter and 12,194 in the second. Hitting the new range means about 42,400 to 47,400 deliveries from July through December. That is close to twice the first-half pace, packed into two quarters, while a new model is still learning the line.

That new model is the point. Rivian began external R2 deliveries on June 9 from Normal, Illinois. Second-quarter production hit 12,613 and deliveries beat the company’s own 9,000 to 11,000 outlook, helped by R1 and Electric Delivery Van volume plus the first R2 handovers. On the July 30 earnings call coverage and company materials, the R2 ramp is still single-shift heavy early, with a second shift targeted by the end of the third quarter and the bigger volume contribution expected in the fourth.

The financials underneath the guidance look better than the old Rivian story, without pretending the hard part is finished. Second-quarter revenue reached $1.658 billion, up 27% year over year. Consolidated gross profit was $179 million, a $385 million swing from the same quarter a year earlier. Automotive gross profit was still a $36 million loss, but that is a $299 million improvement from a $335 million loss a year ago. Rivian said about $100 million of incremental cost of revenues in the quarter came from ramping R2 versus more normalized production levels.

Guidance elsewhere moved with the delivery raise. Adjusted EBITDA loss guidance narrowed to $1.8 billion to $2.0 billion, a $50 million improvement at the midpoint. Capital expenditure guidance fell to $1.7 billion to $1.8 billion, down $250 million at the midpoint on project efficiencies and timing. Liquidity still matters for a factory story: Rivian ended the quarter with about $5.3 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments, then raised roughly $1.3 billion in a July equity follow-on tied partly to Georgia plant financing.

For Asian American and Asian Canadian households shopping R2 against a Model Y, Ioniq 5, or a loaded hybrid crossover, the Eastward question is narrower than Wall Street’s. Can Normal actually put cars in driveways on the back half calendar Rivian just endorsed? Launch Edition pricing around the high $50,000s is still a stretch payment for many families, even if conversion on those early configs has been stronger than Rivian expected. Service capacity, charger adapters, and insurance quotes do not scale just because an earnings deck says Q4.

CEO RJ Scaringe called R2 a game changer for customers and for Rivian’s long-term growth, and pointed to more than 57,000 demo drives in the quarter, a company record. That demand signal is useful. It is not the same thing as a second-shift plant that has already absorbed launch scrap, supplier bottlenecks, and software bugs. Management has also kept the line that R2 is on track for positive gross margin by year-end on an exit-rate basis. Believe the direction. Verify the month your VIN is supposed to arrive.

If you are mid-configuration, keep the ownership tools honest. Run car affordability, public versus home charging, and shop auto insurance before you buy. Pair the R2 shortlist with our notes on customer deliveries beginning and the older NACS adapter melt warning. Rivian asked the market to believe the second half. The second half will answer with trucks and SUVs that either show up or do not.
