Long Island Gas Prices Jump 47% Ahead of Summer Travel

Drivers on Long Island are paying about $4.27 per gallon on average, up sharply from a year ago as summer road trip season collides with higher oil prices.

Downstate New York, which includes Long Island, Westchester, and New York City, averaged 427 cents per gallon on June 1, 2026, according to weekly data from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. That is up from 295 cents per gallon on the same date in 2025, a 44.7 percent increase.

NYSERDA figures show prices climbed through spring, peaking at 448 cents per gallon during the week of May 11 before easing slightly into early June. The week of May 25 still averaged 438.3 cents per gallon, up 46.6 percent from the prior year.

Newsday tied the surge to stronger summer driving demand and geopolitical pressure on oil markets as families begin planning road trips.

The national AAA average for regular gasoline was $4.22 per gallon on June 5, 2026, down 18 cents from the prior week but still well above year-ago levels. For Long Island drivers facing downstate pricing premiums, the pump has become a major line item for beach weekends, city runs, and I-95 corridor trips to visit family.

Summer visit season is when multigenerational households do the math out loud.

A 44.7 percent jump at the pump pushes more families toward hybrids and shorter routes, especially for the I-95 runs to see relatives in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or New England.

Long Island and greater New York carry some of the highest fuel costs in the country, which hits commuter-heavy households hard.

For Asian American families juggling two jobs, school activities, and weekend trips to Flushing, Chinatown, or the Jersey Shore, every fill-up is a reminder that the same drive cost far less last year.

It also makes calculators worth using again.

A road trip that felt affordable last June can feel reckless this one unless you compare gas, hybrid, and EV costs honestly before you commit.

Even a modest shift toward a CR-V Hybrid or RAV4 Hybrid changes the monthly fuel bill in a region where public transit options are limited outside the city core.

The mid-May peak near $4.48 per gallon may ease slightly, but summer demand rarely brings relief for downstate drivers.

Plan routes, pack snacks, and budget fuel like you would a hotel night: non-negotiable.
