EV vs Gas Road Trip Cost Calculator
Compare estimated fuel and charging costs for your next road trip.
EV road trips are not just about range. They are about stop timing, passenger patience, and whether charging fits your snack break. Start with the cost comparison for your route.

Costs are roughly comparable. Your decision may come down to charging convenience, vehicle preference, and route planning rather than cost alone.
Estimates only. Actual costs depend on driving conditions, charging network pricing, weather, and route elevation. Fast charging typically costs more than the rate entered here.
How to use this calculator
Enter your trip distance, your gas vehicle's fuel economy, local gas price, and your EV's efficiency in kWh per 100 miles along with the electricity rate you expect to pay on the road. The tool compares estimated energy cost for the same distance—it does not plan your route or count charging stops.
Use a gas price and electricity rate you can actually expect on the trip. Highway fast-charging is often more expensive per kWh than home charging; if most of your miles will be on DC fast chargers, use a higher rate rather than your off-peak home tariff.
Vehicle efficiency matters as much as energy price. Two drivers on the same route can see different results based on SUV versus sedan efficiency, payload, and speed.
What the results mean
The output is an estimated fuel or charging cost for the distance you entered. It is useful for comparing orders of magnitude between a gas car and an EV on a specific trip, not for predicting your exact receipt at every stop.
Lower estimated cost does not automatically mean an EV is the better trip car for your family. Charging availability, stop timing, passenger patience, and hotel parking still matter and are covered in our road trip guides.
Limitations
This calculator does not include tolls, hotel overnight fees, charging session minimums, idle fees, or time value. It is not financial advice. Verify prices and charging access along your route before you travel.
Common questions
- Are EV charging costs always lower than gas?
- Not always. Costs depend on your vehicle efficiency, local electricity rates, and whether you rely on fast charging versus home or hotel charging.
- Should I factor in charging time?
- This calculator focuses on cost. Time spent charging is a separate planning consideration covered in our road trip guides.
- Is this financial advice?
- No. This tool provides rough cost comparisons for trip planning. Actual fuel and charging prices vary by location, network, and vehicle.
