Zhou Guanyu's Next Cadillac Job Is Selling CT5s

SHANGHAI — Zhou Guanyu already wears Cadillac red and white on race weekends. In June, Cadillac also asked him to help sell the CT5.

Cadillac named its Formula 1 reserve driver a brand ambassador for China alongside the Lyriq-V launch there, then rolled out PROJECT 24, a limited commercial push built around the performance-focused, rear-wheel-drive CT5. The campaign name nods to Zhou's number inside the Cadillac F1 program. June buyers who ordered a CT5 were offered short-window perks that included a 24-month financing plan, deposit benefits, a major-damage vehicle replacement offer, and signed gifts for V-Performance package customers.

Will Stacy, vice president of Cadillac in China, framed the hire around focus and determination rather than lap times. That is the street version of the same story the race team told in January: Zhou is useful because he has recent Formula 1 seat time, knows how hard car development is mid-season, and already worked with team principal Graeme Lowdon and race driver Valtteri Bottas.

The Cadillac Formula 1 Team confirmed Zhou as reserve on January 5, 2026, supporting Bottas and Sergio Perez while Colton Herta serves as test driver. Shanghai-born Zhou remains China's first and only driver with a full-time F1 race seat on his résumé, with 68 Grands Prix from 2022 through 2024 at Alfa Romeo and Kick Sauber, points on debut in Bahrain, and Kick Sauber's only points finish of 2024 in Qatar. He spent 2025 as a Ferrari reserve, useful again because Ferrari supplies Cadillac's 2026 power unit and gearbox.

I care less about whether he starts a Grand Prix this year and more about what Cadillac thinks Asian performance shoppers want to see on a sedan brochure. F1 halo usually sells watches, energy drinks, and fantasy. PROJECT 24 sells a midsize rear-drive Cadillac you can finance, insure, and park under a building with a height stick.

That matters in North America too. GM's Mary Barra just put next-generation gas CT5, XT5, and XT6 dates on the calendar starting next spring through 2028, after U.S. buyers still found 4,311 CT5s in the second quarter while several Cadillac EVs sold fewer units each. The China campaign is not a U.S. incentive sheet, but it is a clear signal: Cadillac still believes a driver's sedan can carry brand heat while the Escalade and crossovers do the volume.

GM said Cadillac posted solid China luxury results in Q1 2026, with XT5 up 29 percent year over year and CT5 holding steady, and pointed to the team's Shanghai Grand Prix weekend as brand theater in the same market Zhou represents.
